Nation Name:
Officially The Democratic People's Republic of Alsakan, it is for all intents and purposes an absolute monarchy, even being reflected on more and more, though vestiges of the worker based revolution stay on.
Government:
Dynastic: Power is concentrated in the hands of a culturally legitimized family or families. The rulers are often titled as Kings, Dukes or other rulers, and are usually honored and revered by the populace at large. Their claims and decorations allow them to maintain power lawfully as well as militarily.
Power of Tradition - +2 Order to all Systems
Spoiled Blood - 50% chance of any agents you recruit starting with a random negative trait as you are forced to promote incompetent family members to positions of importance.
Description: Officially a democracy, voting being limited to intra-party elections by roughly 15% of the population, and the almost Byzantine levels of tradition and power wielded by families has led real power to be put into the hands of the Tsura'koh family, with elections having predetermined winners from the Tsura'koh dynasty. Though, with recent moves for loyalty over fear based policies of population control the party has been voting more and more in favor of the 'favored' candidate in the election. The current leader Mitth Var Tsura'koh succeeded his father, eternal leader Vargei Tanq Tsura'koh, only a few decades ago, but has already begun pushing a cult of personality and power pooling unrivaled by his forefathers.
Species:
Ferrosi
Description:
Grey-skinned humanoids with high, sloping foreheads, pupils that take up the majority of the visible eye, and a nasal cavity that's merely two slits in the skin roughly where a human nose would be. Generally taller than other species, and with denser bone structures, though their musculature can often vary wildly, and their skin is smooth and dry.
Homeworld: Alsakan
Description: A world with lower gravity than average, massive oceans, and significantly cooler temperatures than most other habitable planets, Alsakan is unique. It's habitable land, in isles and archipelagos across the world, is nearly entirely covered in cities that stretch out onto the ocean in massive, multi-story blocks. Some older parts of the planet have large segments of the populace that survive within the rubble of preceding civilizations at the base of many of the skyscrapers, stretching down nearly a kilometer in tunnel and compound networks. These areas hold roughly 1/5 of the total population of the planet, and are collectively called 'The Lowground'.
Large desalination factories dot many of the beaches, and factories the size of large towns are frequently seen. The world is quite polluted, but air scrubbing technology and a revival of clean energy is curbing it somewhat.
Another rough 1/5 of the worlds population live in the ocean, in large cities and interconnected pressurized chambers either floating on the surface, or sprawling on the sea floor. These areas, called collectively 'The Sea' are famous for their massive fish farms, as well as their participation in the Great Space War, where their participation on the side of the secessionists was comparatively higher than other parts of the world.
Capital City:
No official capital city, as most parts of the island chain it's located on are connected in an extended urban center, but the capital district is called Fulgur, and is referred to as such when discussing or mentioning the capital or the government's place of administration.

History: The world started as most did, with a burgeoning civilization that slowly homogenized and coalesced into a few superpower states and their spheres. Eventually, through economic pressure and lack of natural resources, the states opposed to the parliamentary Republic known as 'The Federated Isles' broke apart or were annexed, leading to, eventually, a dominance over the entire planet, either by direct control or de facto control over nearly vassalized states.
The civilization took to the stars, and for a time, things were good. The immediately available and capable of being colonized cost efficiently places in the system were the thick asteroid belt surrounding the nearby gas giant, and the somewhat distant moon of said gas giant. For roughly two hundred years, the Federated Isles boomed, with space travel becoming more common, industrialization becoming more present, and the space colonies becoming hubs of shipyards, military service, as well as industrialized output. After a time, though, the colonies became more and more politically and culturally distant from the policies of the government, which attempted to levy heavier taxes on the colonies and force them to ship natural resources back towards the home world. Differences grew into resentment, which grew into dissent and active political fighting. The Secession Crisis was kicked off when the entire colonial block, in addition to many representatives from The Sea, walked out on a parliamentary meeting debating the confiscation of self-governance from the colonies, under accusations of 'corruption', 'illegality', and trade disputes . A boycott of parliament only fueled rhetoric, and militias from both parties began organizing, mostly in the tunnels connecting the mainland from The Sea.
The Sea and the colonies were on the brink of secession, but war didn't truly kick off until a trade ship refusing to pay the exorbitant tarrifs on private businesses was fired upon, and destroyed with all hands lost. The colonies saw this as a breach of their sovereignty and nearly instantly seceded, mobilizing their now rather considerable naval forces and industry for a war, while also pressuring The Sea. Military units were deployed to The Sea, but were immediately engaged by militias on the outskirts of their territory, becoming stalemated and bogged down in indecisive combat. The Sea declared independence the same day.
The war was as brutal as it was short. Within a week the colonies had shown dominance in the few devastating space battles fought between the two nations, though at the loss of many of the Moon cities to orbital bombardment, and The Sea's quickly mobilized population was engaging in urban combat in the outskirts of the capitol district. Unused asteroids were being launched into the atmosphere to strike at loyalist parts of the world, over-working the point-defense systems and landing critical hits on industrial and population centers, resulting in the deaths of millions, in addition to the kinetic and beam weaponry being used to strike hits all over the planet. It went on like this for months, and nearly two years of devastating warfare. It was at this time that a rather ignored intellectual by the name of Marl Tir Marx'an and his works became popular among the desperate population, raising him to a near god-like status overnight. His political theory, one that valued the worker, hyper-industrialism, and a state that could provide basic needs for every individual rang true with many disgruntled workers, in addition to many in the military who saw their nation being destroyed by a government unwilling to make peace, and safe under the massive point-defense systems of the Capitol.
Peaceful protests against the war turned into violent riots, and quiet political thought turned into increasingly common terrorist and anti-government violent actions. The government was torn apart within weeks, and a peace deal that heavily favored the colonies and The Sea was brokered. The culture and government was irreversibly changed, with the Tsura'koh family coming into power by leading a minor political faction and bullying their way to the top. Vargei Tanq Tsura'koh's grandfather, Chur Tir Tsura'koh, was the first in a line of 5 members of his family to hold power at an absolute level, and he quickly made changes. Industralization, a set of military and cultural purges, and an implementation of strictly state media put the worker at the forefront, and with him the great ideals of the new nation, those of self-sacrifice, love of the state, and hatred for those who forced them to sign the Bitter Peace. After thirty years, and a jump in dissent within The Sea after a long-term failure to address the sources of their crippling poverty and reliance on the former colonial states giving a window of opportunity, the People's Democratic Republic of Alsakan went to war.
The navy showed it's crews absolute devotion on the whole to the idea of the state, and there were several examples of marines cornered within a ship they had boarded preferring to pack explosives into their compartment and destroy the ship, instead of surrendering, as well as capital ships doing suicide runs into the asteroid belt, annihilating as much as they could before being targeted and destroyed. The Sea was quickly taken by a combined approach of the tunnels and the surface, the great domes of the underwater cities being torn open and the people inside killed in droves. Infantry brigades, with fanatical inspiration from speeches live-recorded from the Capitol, committed massacres and a form of genocide unparalleled in the histories. Explosives racked many of the outer connections, and huge domed cities too large to be taken were put under siege, their food supplies and desalinization planets destroyed. The Sea's population dropped by nearly 150,000,000, 1/3 of it's population, before the devastation was over.
After this quick victory, with the war only a few months in, and the war in space swinging in favor of the DPRA, the full might of the nation was forced onto the former colonies. Troops were landed on key cities on the moon and various larger asteroids, but all landings were ultimately pushed back with heavy losses. Eventually, after months of over-world siege, the former overlords of the colonies decided to end the crisis, one way or another. In a show of force and might on a scale larger than anything ever seen, the entirety of the asteroids were destroyed with nuclear warheads and conventional bombardments, with only a few million refugees fleeing back to the moon. The same treatment was given to Phoebus and it's people, even after messages declaring the need for a ceasefire by the government of Phoebus were recieved. Light bombardment turned into the destruction of the world's surface, with the Admiral, Admiral Gron Tir Tusk'an being ordered by the home government multiple times to stand down, refusing to cease the destruction until they were annihilated. He was later executed, though not without significant protest and dissent. Only a score million of former colonials survived, out of a population of nearly forty billion before the war, mostly fleeing to The Sea, where they had at least a minor amount of sympathy.
Called the Great Space War colloquially, officially the Second War of Alsakan Hegemony by the government, and the War of Alsakan Aggression by survivors of the secessionist block, the war took a heavy toll. Killing huge swathes of the population, bringing about a collective shock on the culture through the sheer volume of violence, and the destruction of much of the industrial capacity of the system.
This was nearly 160 years ago, and while the planet bounced back rather well, they have not returned to colonization since. The wrecks and ruins of the secessionist block was originally meant to be a reminder of the war, a sort of memorial, but has morphed into a mere fixture in the system, the 'Floating Gardens' of broken habitats and split asteroids becoming a near holy site for many of the survivors, but ignored by most of the rest of the population. Time went on, and little changed. Education and culture downplayed the devastation of the war, up-played the Tsura'koh families involvement and heroism, and eventually led to the current situation, the birth of the Empire. It's well accepted that the Tsura'koh family is meant to be in power, the only problem is the change to 'The Empire'. While generally tolerated by the population, and fanatically desired by ultra-nationalists, those loyal to the DPRA and it's ideals, though relatively small in number, are quite resistant.
Education, public monuments, and media have changed the Democratic Peoples Republic of Alsakan into what is now a glorified monarchy, soon to be a true one.
Culture: The culture has radically changed within the last several decades. Originally one based on freedom of expression, and an emphasis on the rights of man, the revolution and subsequent purges and collectivization efforts quickly turned those values into revolutionary ideals and a form of cult around the working man and an industrialized, self-sufficient society. In recent years, though, a switch has begun to take place within education and public monuments/propoganda, with revolutionary ideals and the worker being de-emphasized in favor of glorification of the Tsura'koh family and creating a disproportionate representation of them within Alsakan history. Additionally, within the last generation a large push towards order and traditionalism has taken place, the uniforms of the navy, for instance, being changed from dark red clothes mimicking factory workers to sharp tunics and pants made of finer cotton and composed of dark/light dichotomies of color.
The culture is patriarchal in regards to the structure of the family and home life, thought relatively gender equal in terms of occupation and education as well as income. There has begun to become a backlash against women working or not supporting their families in traditional positions in the family by small, radically traditionalist and conservative sections of society.
Large value is placed on being pro-military to the point of fanaticism, a product of the almost monthly military parades and mandatory two year military service undertaken by all male Ferrosi at age of maturity.
