History:
Kwazan has a long history of foreign interference. It was the site, centuries ago before the advent of FTL travel, their planet was the site of a colonization attempt via sleeper-ship. The foreign colonists set down in a valley of subsistence farmers, tribes and cities. They didn't seek to conquer the native peoples, instead using them as labor - trading medicine and petty gifts for plundered masses of ore, slaves and other resources. Many tribes grew rich off their trade, while others were annihilated or oppressed.
The tribes of Imatagwe, Zulakwanzi, and Ngawete were three of the most powerful - the most influential. Serving as close allies of the colonists they conquered lands, took slaves, and spread far and wide. They were permitted to learn some of the colonist's technology - to wield guns in war and use modern medicine to heal their wounds. Over the generations they grew powerful, and the colonists grew complacent.
The first sign of disharmony began over the question of greater assimilation. Some tribesmen were abandoning the traditional ways in favor of living like the colonists. Others felt that while the colonists had their uses, their ways were not the tribe's ways. The colonists themselves were divided on the issue, some wishing to "uplift" the "savage" tribes, while others were fearful that the natives, who vastly outnumbered them, were perhaps already too close for comfort. Then there was Kwaza Imatagwe, the young genius, inventor and spokesman. He saw in the controversy an opportunity. Why, he argued, should they simply do the colonists will? They had the power to take from the colonists what they wanted and still follow their old ways. He played on the sense of alienation the old tribal leaders felt at the young men who abandoned their names and homes for the colonist's fine clothes and the jealousy of those who were rejected for "uplift." He smuggled and copied colonist designs and build factories hidden in the forests to show others that they didn't need the colonists. And when the colonists finally got tired of his outspoken animosity and sent a force to arrest him and destroy his factory, he struck back.
The three tribes that had once been the colonist's staunchest allies turned on them. The colonists were slaughtered, their technology seized, and their civilians forced to teach their former pawns before they too were executed. the "traitors" who had abandoned their clans were gruesomely executed via electrocution. Kwaza gave each of the tribes dominion over certain fields of industry under his overall control, creating a centralized conglomerate to replace the colonist's trade, fed by primitive tributary states who paid in raw materials for protection.
It was roughly a century later that Kwaza's successors dealt with a new foreign threat: the Antoviyan empire. The Antoviyans came to Kwazan for slaves. In many places they found and took them easily, blasting any resistence from orbit and sending down soldiers to seize entire towns and cities. The Kwazan Conglomerate, however, would not yield so easily. They used primitive shielding technology, spaceships, and surface-to-orbit weapons to defend their holdings against the foreign onslaught. After a brief war lasting mere months, the Antoviyans simply avoided the Conglomerate's territory and protectorates, taking their slaves from weaker targets.
The Decimation broke any resistance to the Conglomerate that had existed. Troublesome nation-states crumbled and entire tribes begged the Conglomerate to protect them from the foreign slavers. As soon as the Antoviyans left the President declared the annexation of the entire planet, vowing to unite Kwazan against foreign threats. Those who objected were crushed by the Conglomerate's more advanced forces, their resources feeding the ever-growing industry and technology of the company. Those tribes that were favored were brought into the conglomerate.
Now, with Kwazan united under the Conglomerate, it is time to expand outward.
Culture:
Matriarchy
The IkaKwazan are biologically predisposed to be matriarchal. They usually give birth to twins or triplets rather than single children. In the tribes, women may have several husbands, something that is usually considered a sign of power and prestige. Lineage and tribal membership passes through the mother, and the head of a family is always an older female. Males are usually treated with some level of disdain, often relegated to lower-level jobs for less pay and expected to make sacrifices to support their wives or sisters.
Tribal Affiliation
Most IkaKwazan are organized into one of seven tribes. Membership in a tribe bestows citizenship in the conglomerate, along with rights and protections. Each tribe also has its own rituals, clothing styles, and "secret history." Tribal members often refer to each other as "brother" and "sister," and tribal members are supposed to treat one another as family. Each tribe also has large holdings within the Conglomerate, usually managed by tribally elected Elders, who will distribute profits and manage investments like a fund. Tribes will also sometimes "adopt" people with no tribe into their number, putting them through the same initiation rituals that everyone in the tribe has gone through. Tribes are modestly exogamic - marrying within a tribe is not outright forbidden, but usually frowned upon.
The "untribed," usually people kicked out of their tribe for bad behavior or born without a tribe, have almost no rights. If they can distinguish themselves they might be adopted into a tribe, but this is an uphill battle for a class stereotyped as lazy, parasitic and vice-ridden.
Politics
Tribal politics are an arcane, often confusing system of relationships and acquaintances with a big pot of money as a prize. Tribal leaders manage their tribe's holdings with all the jealousy and calculation of a banker or hedge fund. Many of them are dynastic heirs to older elders. Tribal money and benefits are usually given out as a way to buy votes or keep up appearances - or occasionally, as investments that are expected to pay off later. No one, however, doubts the power of the Conglomerate president, a position with enough power and money to override entire tribes and bankrupt nations. The position is inscrutable, powerful, and revered for the leadership its members have brought in the past.
Family
Family is incredibly important to the tribes. Most households are organized into extended families, with an elder female as the head of the household. Obedience to one's elders, contributing to the family, and to a lesser extent, treating tribe members as family are all considered cultural virtues.
Location: Near the RWU, preferably on a "hub" system with 3+ wormholes.
