I sighed. Looking at the display on my wrist, the time was 15:32. I glanced around the plaza from my spot at the pub's patio. The place was bustling with people walking around,
going in and out of shops, stopping to chat with strangers and old friends alike. The towers of the Eastern District loomed above, reaching into the sky as if to grasp it. Yet the
sun gleamed down unimpeded. It bathed the plaza in warm light. All of this was well and good; I quite enjoyed sitting outside enjoying a meal on a day like this. But I didn't plan
on doing it alone. I looked at my wrist again. 15:45.
He was supposed to be here at 15:00.
I dug into my satchel and pulled out my Terminal Pad.
Ring, ring, ring.
Ring, ring, ring.
Ring, ring, ring.
Beep.
"Uh, hi, Vela..." Dravis's face appeared on the screen, but he refused to look at the camera.
I cleared my throught. "Hey Dravis. Have any plans today? Because I thought we could go out to Labrin's for lunch." I paused, looking around, feigning surprise.
"Oh look! I'm already here!"
"Listen, Vela..."
I scowled at him.
"Something came up. It's a work thing. I forgot. I'm sorry." He finally looked into the camera, a frown on his face.
"Uh-huh. Alright. But why didn't you tell me?"
A sigh, and a pause.
"I'm-I'm sorry, OK? Can we reschedule?"
"HA! You're funny." I grinned at him, evilly. "I've had it with you. Why don't you just lose my number?"
"Vela. Vela, wait-"
Beep.
I exhaled and slumped in my chair. I rubbed my eyes.
"Are you doing alright, ma'am?" The waitress smiled courteously at me. I looked up at her.
"Dandy." I looked at my glass of soda. It was half empty, but it had been refilled several times already. "I'll take my check, please."
The waitress frowned. "Oh. I thought you were waiting for someone?"
"Was. I was waiting for someone." I looked back out over the plaza. Still busy, though the sun had dipped a bit lower in the sky. The waitress uttered a short "oh" and
grabbed the Pocket Terminal from her apron pocket.
"I'm really sorry to hear that," she said, as she fiddled with the device's controls.
I fixed my posture, sitting upright. "Don't be. I knew he was a bastard. I just wanted to give him a chance."
The waitress made a "hm" sound. "That'll be 2.24 Credits."
I wrestled my Credits card from my satchel. The waitress promptly scanned it, and I stowed it away once again. My wrist made a short beep, and the words
"NEW RECIEPT FROM 'Labrin's Pub'" flashed across it.
"Thanks," the waitress said. "I hope you find someone better. Have a nice day."
She walked away. I muttered a "thanks."
The plaza was thinning out. People were streaming west towards the beginnings of the Annual Meliniza Fair. I briefly thought about
going, even alone. But I stood up, grabbed my satchel, and headed east.
